This studio painting of boats rising on the tide was based upon studies and sketches made at the harbour in Scarborough. Kane said, ‘They were observations of fishing boats rising and changing colour as the sun illuminated the vista. The boats rocked and moved altering the perspective like a cubist painting. These ideas were floating around as I started to develop the composition.’
